First Steps
*For the American
1. Contact the Italian consulate for your region in America and inquire what do you need to get married.
2. Gather all Necessary Documents for a “Atto Notorio” and find witnesses who match the qualifications.
3. Have the Documents translated by official certified translators, and obtain Apostille for each document that requires one.
3. Make an appointment at the consulate to receive your Atto Notorio and plan your trip accordily.
4. Print and fill out the form for another Necessary Document called “Nulla Osta” but do not sign it.
5. Make a appointment at a American embassy in Italy for a “Nulla Osta” and bring along the form and 50$.
6. Next you need to legalize the document by go to another place, Make an appointment at The Prefettura.
7. Buy a marca da bollo. You can get these stamps, which are used to legalize almost every legal document you will ever sign in Italy, for 16 euros at any tabaccheria.
8. Bring your nulla osta. When you go to the prefettura, bring your nulla osta and the marca da bollo. Once there, the officials will approve it and stamp it, making it an official legal document.
9. Bring EVERYTHING to local Comune or city hall in the town/city where you plan to get married in. Meet with a Civil Registrar, who will check all of your paperwork and, if it is all there and all correct, will publish The Marriage Banns.
10. Now you have 180 days to get married.
